Benefits of BJJ for Law Enforcement

As you may know, it is extremely important for law enforcement to stay in shape and on top of their game. With the increasingly high crime rate, this is more important than ever. There are many things officers can supplement their training with, but we recommend Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) to be the best as it provides more than just strength training.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Law Enforcement Programs at KAIZEN

At KAIZEN, our Adult Jiu Jitsu Program offers more than just a series of techniques to be executed–it is an opportunity for personal growth and development. Professor Bruno Jacré Dias leads veteran instructors to inspire you to discover that you are stronger than you think you are–physically, socially, mentally, and spiritually. Kaizen creates the possibility for students to maximize the potential within themselves. Law enforcement officers are responsible for peace and safety, which is why our classes are designed to help them stay calm and gain the protection they need in the line of duty.

Benefits of BJJ for Law Enforcement:

  1. Self Defense & Safety - Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a great form of self-defense for law enforcement because it focuses on grappling and ground fighting. This means that officers can learn how to control and subdue an attacker without the use of excessive force. This is important because officers often deal with perpetrators of all different shapes and sizes, who can be dangerous to apprehend. BJJ will teach officers techniques that protect all parties involved, including the officer, the perpetrator, and any bystanders. Making an arrest is hands down one of the most difficult parts of being an officer, so these skills are essential to implementing safe and effective strategies.

  2. Reducing Injury Risk - Thousands of officers each year become injured on the job. BJJ implements techniques that will help officers avoid injuries and risk factors for all parties involved. Practicing also offers a comprehensive regimen to provide cardiovascular improvement and increased core strength.

Officers will also achieve better flexibility, dexterity, range of motion, and agility. Officers who maintain a flexible, agile, and ready-for-action body can reduce their risk of injury, just like athletes training in any sport. Working as a police officer may require you to encounter movements that are unnatural, unexpected, and possibly out of your control. If an officer participates in BJJ classes, and supplements their training with stretching or yoga, they can learn to move their body in ways that allow them to regain control of situations and extend their bodies into deep stretches, all with reduced risk for injury.

Not becoming tired in the heat of a conflict is crucial to the job and can be improved through the natural progression of muscle conditioning in BJJ.

  3. Stress-Management - Law enforcement officers are constantly under various stress factors due to the nature of their profession. They are often faced with dangerous and unpredictable situations, and they must be able to make quick decisions in life-or-death situations. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) can help officers develop the skills they need to stay calm and focused under pressure.

In a 2014 study from Harvard University’s School of Public Health, it was cited that police officers can face about 30-70 times higher risk of experiencing sudden cardiac death (SCD) when they are faced with stressful situations, compared to those of routine or non-emergency scenarios. Learning to manage stress, which can be done through continued training in BJJ, for emergency scenarios such as arrests can help officers reduce the risk for SCD.

In addition, BJJ can help officers develop mental toughness and resilience. It teaches them how to deal with stress and adversity in a healthy way. This can be beneficial for officers both on and off the job.

  4. Building Confidence - Being a law enforcement officer is a demanding and challenging job. Officers must be prepared to deal with a variety of situations, from routine traffic stops to dangerous confrontations with criminals.

To be successful, officers need to have confidence in their abilities and a strong sense of self-esteem. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) can help officers develop these qualities. Learning to control and subdue an opponent in the sport of BJJ can be a valuable skill for officers, as it can help them to avoid using deadly force in dangerous situations.

When officers learn how to defend themselves and control an opponent, it can give them a sense of empowerment and security. This can be helpful in dealing with the stressful and often dangerous situations that officers face daily.

In addition, BJJ can help officers to develop a positive attitude. The sport is challenging and requires dedication and perseverance. Learning BJJ can teach officers how to overcome adversity and achieve their goals. This can be a valuable lesson for officers, as it can help them to stay motivated and focused on their job, even in difficult times.

Overall, BJJ can be a valuable tool for law enforcement officers. It can help them develop the skills they need to stay safe and protect the public. Our goal is to prepare students for life’s challenges, and we are proud to train law enforcement and help them gain the skills they need for their job as a valuable addition to their training.
